Sketching the Hair

Use loose strokes and establish the hair. This is one of the areas of the face that you can really exaggerate on. Looking at the reference photo you can see that the front of his hair is plumed up almost like a peacock and this is somewhere that you can really exaggerate the caricature.

Detailing the Eye

When you are drawing eyes it’s important that you keep in mind the thickness of the eyelids. In this example drawing you can see that the upper eyelid has been darkened to show the thickness and on the lower lid there’s a thin sketchy line just below where the eyelid meets the eye. The eye here has also been shaded in to indicate the dark brown eyes of Hugh Jackman.

You’ll also notice the line above the upper eyelid to show the fold of the eyelid, as well as a curved line below the eye. Finally there’s been some lines added curving away from the eye to indicate age.

Shading the Mouth

There’s no big trick to this, first you need to shade the upper lip fully. If you think about the angle of the lip and how light is usually coming from overhead you can understand how the upper lip is usually in shadow. As for the lower lip – adding some shading will help indicate the color of the lip, but you’ll also need to think about how the moisture of the lips reflects light and this is why the mid part of the lower lip doesn’t receive as much shading as the other parts.

Adding More Stubble and Shading the Hair

The final thing that you need to do on this step is adding in more stubble and shading the hair. Don’t get too caught up on the shading – it’s not as hard as you may think. Just start light, and then if you need to make one part darker you can just go over the same area again with another layer of shading.
