How to Draw Hair Video Series

How to Draw Hair

Want to learn how to draw hair that flows naturally from the head, comes from a perfectly placed hairline, and has beautiful shading with a healthy shine to it?

You will be covering all of that in this online drawing course from Pencil Kings instructor Sycra Yasin.

What You Will Learn

  • How to draw hair that flows perfectly along the shape of the head
  • Create a nice, soft natural looking hairline
  • How to draw long and short hairstyles
  • Adding shading and texture to your hair to give it a perfect shine

A common problem that you may have run into is that when you draw the hair it just doesn’t seem to fit right on the head. It’s almost as if when you add the hair then the whole face starts to lose its proportion. In the first lesson we will show you exactly why this happens and how you can avoid this with your own hair drawing.

After that you’ll learn how to overcome another beginner mistake that’s often made regarding the hairline. The hair comes out of the skull with thousands of individual pieces of hair, and your drawing needs to take this into account. Many beginners will make the mistake of drawing a hard, solid line for the hairline, but you’ll learn how to overcome this with a more natural and realistic method.

Next, you’re going to go back to what you started to learn in the first video, so that you can begin drawing hair that flows along the surface of the head. This knowledge is essential for drawing long hair styles.

The last thing you’re going to learn about how to draw hair is how to light and shade your hair. It’s really easy to get beautiful, believable shading on your hair and we’re going to show you exactly how to do it.

This is very helpful and informative. All the lessons are.

  2. Nikolay says:

What kind of brush is he using in all the tutorials? I’m still not used to my tablet and I’ve tried lots of the standard brushes and settings but I can’t get anything that looks like his strokes.

    • Redbeard says:

I think he is just using a standard round brush, but make sure the pen pressure is turned on in your Shape Dynamics and Transfer option

    • Thomas says:

He’s using the 24 pt scatter brush in PS. If you want to see more, like the paper texture he uses, go to and look under the resources tab. Cheers!

  8. Jackie says:

I love your tutorials, but this one wasn’t very helpful. All the lines were messy and didn’t show a full final “product” of styles. I was a bit disappointed. I didn’t feel I learned much from this section.

  10. Dan says:

I’m with Jackie, I feel like it was missing a final product besides the form of the hair, for us noobs it will be difficult to finish the hair from this point :P

    Nicely done… : )

  12. Frank says:

It seems like this type of stuff should be common sense, but I myself kept drawing ‘flat’ looking hair and I would wonder why I was getting that result. Thanks for the tutotrial.

I agree with Jackie. I feel this one could have been a little bit more detailed and also dealt with a larger array of hair styles such as buzz or short cuts.

  16. Didem says:

Now I’m more motivated and concerned about drawing hair, Sycra’s courses really helped me a lot both on his channel and pencilkings, but I wish we could’ve covered drawing different hairstyles and types, like ponytails, braids, buns and curly and wavy hair.
